Carina Constellation: Eta Carinae & NGC 3372
Carina IAU constellation guide: southern Milky Way keel of Argo Navis hosting Canopus, the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372), and hypergiant system Eta Carinae.
Sky Navigation & Astrophysical Context
Carina forms the southern keel of the historic super-constellation Argo Navis, covering 494 square degrees of the deep southern sky. At its western end shines Canopus (Alpha Carinae, V = −0.74), an A9 II bright giant that ranks as the second-brightest star in the entire night sky after Sirius.
The eastern half of Carina slices directly along the tangent of the Carina-Sagittarius spiral arm, creating arguably the densest concentration of naked-eye star clusters and emission nebulae anywhere in the Milky Way.
The centerpiece of this spiral-arm vista is the Carina Nebula (NGC 3372, V ≈ +1.0), a 2°-wide star-forming complex at 2.35 kiloparsecs that outshines and dwarfs the Orion Nebula, and encloses the bipolar Homunculus Nebula surrounding the 5-million-solar-luminosity luminous blue variable binary Eta Carinae.
Equatorial Center Position & Transit Altitude
Carina is centered near Right Ascension 08h 42m 00s, Declination −63° 00′ 00″ (The Keel (of the ship Argo Navis)).
Practical Star-Hopping & Observing Tips
- From latitudes south of +20°N, scan the eastern Carina Milky Way with the unaided eye or 10×50 binoculars to take in the 2° flower-like lanes of NGC 3372.
- Use a telescope at 150×–250× inside the Keyhole dark nebula region of NGC 3372 to resolve the orange-red double-lobed Homunculus shell of Eta Carinae.
