B-V Color Index & Stellar Temperature Calculator
Estimate stellar effective temperature T_eff (K), Harvard spectral type (OBAFGKM), Wien peak wavelength, and bolometric luminosity (L☉) from Johnson B−V color index and radius.
T_eff = 4600 K × [ (0.92(B−V) + 1.7)⁻¹ + (0.92(B−V) + 0.62)⁻¹ ] ; L / L☉ = (R / R☉)² × (T_eff / 5772 K)⁴Interactive Calculation Workbench
Derivation & Physical Background
Because hot stars emit predominantly in blue/ultraviolet wavelengths while cool stars peak in red/infrared wavelengths, the difference between a star's blue magnitude (B) and visual magnitude (V)—its B−V color index—serves as a direct thermometer of its photosphere.
This calculator evaluates the empirical Ballesteros (2012) blackbody passband relation to convert any B−V index into effective temperature T_eff (K), maps the temperature to its Harvard OBAFGKM spectral class, and applies the Stefan-Boltzmann law L = 4πR²σT⁴ to compute total stellar luminosity in solar units.
Assumptions, Approximations & Validity Limits
- Assumes an unreddened intrinsic color index (B−V)₀; distant stars behind interstellar dust must first be corrected for color excess E(B−V) = (B−V)_obs − (B−V)₀.
- Very cool M-dwarfs and carbon stars (B−V > +1.5) have strong TiO and C₂ molecular absorption bands that deviate from pure Planckian blackbody continua.
