Emission, Reflection & Planetary Nebulae Catalog
Observational reference index of ionized H II star-forming clouds and asymptotic-giant-branch planetary nebulae.
Catalog Scope & Cross-Identification Notes
Galactic nebulae fall into two primary astrophysical regimes: massive H II star-forming complexes ionized by young O and B stars (such as the Orion, Lagoon, and Carina Nebulae), and compact planetary nebulae ejected by dying intermediate-mass stars (such as the Ring, Dumbbell, and Helix Nebulae).
Because both classes emit strongly in the doubly ionized oxygen [O III] doublet at 495.9 nm and 500.7 nm and the Hydrogen-beta line at 486.1 nm, where human scotopic rod vision peaks, narrowband visual filters dramatically boost their contrast against light-polluted skies.
